FC Barcelona and the Italian club Sampdoria came face to face on 9/8/2016 in a Gamper Trophy game. Gamper games are played in the honor of Barcelona’s founder Joan Gamper who died in 1930. The competition is an annual friendly one which is played before the start of the season of FC Barcelona. The competition was played for the first time in 1966, and is played every year till date. Last night, the annual Gamper game was played between FC Barcelona and Sampdoria at the Camp Nou. Another record created by Messi in Gamper trophy game against Sampodria.
The clash was an interesting one but it was pretty much clear before half time that who is going to win. Lionel Messi gave a world class performance in the game and was the reason Barcelona won the game. The first goal of the game was scored by Luis Suarez 15 minutes after the start of the game. Messi did something unusual for the build up of the goal. He received a long ball from Andres Iniesta and gave a bicycle kick assist to Suarez who successfully finished it.
The next goal came at the 21st minute of the game when Messi received a cross from Rakitic. He went around the goalkeeper and scored a great goal. On the 32nd minute of the game, Barcelona won a free kick and Messi was the one to strike. He scored a great free-kick from a fair distance out.
1 bicycle kick assist, 1 round the goalkeeper goal, and 1 great freekick! All of this in a time span of 32 minutes. Isn’t that what you call a spectacular individual performance? It surely was a mesmerizing show by the Argentine. The game also created 2 records for Leo. After scoring the 2nd goal, he became the all-time top scorer of the competition with 8 goals. At the end of the match, Lionel Messi won the man of the match award. It was his 3rd MOTM award in Gamper trophy which is a record. No other player has been able to win the award more than once. But this is Messi. Breaking the records are a routine for him!
