10. Real Madrid ended Barcelona’s 39 games unbeaten streak

Zinedine Zidane faced Barcelona for the first time as a manager of Real Madrid in April 2016. Barcelona was 12 points on the top and was on an unbeaten streak of 39 games in all competitions. Pique gave Barcelona the lead in the early moments of the second half of the game. Zidane’s Real made a great comeback from 1-0 to 1-2 and ended Barcelona’s unbeaten streak.

9. Bayern Munich’s comeback against Juventus

Juventus faced Bayern Munich in the round of 16 of UCL 2015/16 season. The first leg ended 2-2 at the Juventus stadium giving Bayern Munich an advantage on the away goal rule. At Allianz Arena, Juventus scored 2 goals very early and Bayern seemed to be devastated. But 2 goals from Lewandowski and Muller saved Bayern from getting eliminated. Kingsley Coman, who is on loan at Bayern Munich from Juventus, assisted and scored a goal in the extra time. The game ended with an aggregate score 6-4 and Bayern Munich went on in the competition. 8. Chelsea and Eden Hazard

The season 2015/16 was a season to forget for Chelsea. The defending Champions finished 8th in the league and their stars, such as Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, were completely out of form. Somehow Eden Hazard got his form back when Chelsea faced Tottenham on the second last match day of the season. He scored an insane goal to draw the game 2-2 and ended the title hopes of Tottenham. Under Conte, Hazard and Chelsea are back to their spectacular form. They are ruling the league and are on the top of the table.


7. Manchester United

Past few seasons have been disastrous for Manchester United. No manager seems to be capable of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United sacked Luis Van Gaal at the end of the season and appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager. With the special one coming on the board, in came some special players like Zlatan, Mikhitarian, and Eric Bailly. United also bought Paul Pogba for a record transfer fee. A new era seemed to be starting. But nothing worked. Jose Mourinho isn’t the special one anymore and Manchester United is struggling even in Europa League as well.


6. Real Madrid’s UCL triumph

On the 6th spot of our list of top 10 dramatic moments in football 2016 is Real Madrid’s UCL triumph. Real Madrid’s season was becoming a disaster under the newly appointed coach Rafael Benitez. They lost 0-4 to Barcelona on their home ground. The manager was replaced by Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid became the mighty again. They got a UEFA Champions League out of that horrendous season which was a remarkable achievement by the Los Blancos side.

5. Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 win

The UEFA Euro 2016 competition started with great excitement. In a completely unexpected turn of events, Portugal progressed to the knockout stages without winning even a single game. But they didn’t lose a single game as well. Somehow, they reached the final and won the game with a late goal from Eder. Pepe, Renato Sanchez, Eder, and Rui Patricio starred for Portugal in the competition.

4. Francesco Totti’s journey with AS Roma continues

One of the greatest number 10s in the game, Francesco Totti enjoyed a spectacular career with his childhood club AS Roma and the Italian national team. But 2015/16 season seemed to be the last campaign for him with the club. There was no contract renewal offer from the club for the 40-year-old player. But on 20th April, Totti came in from the bench at 86th minute against Torino. His side was 1-0 down. But Totti wanted to prove that he was far from over. He scored a brace and turned the table and gave his team the lead. This earned him a contract with Roma and he is still on with the club. 3. Lionel Messi wins 5th Ballon d’Or

In January 2016, Lionel Messi created history by winning Ballon d’Or for the 5th time. No other player has ever won more than 3 golden balls. But this man is not normal. He was the key player in Barcelona’s treble-winning season and earned his reward by getting the player of the year award.


2. Leicester City’s Premier League triumph

The greatest underdog story in the football was created by Leicester City in 2016. Leicester City was playing in 2nd division 3 seasons back. They dramatically won the league and were promoted to the first division, the Barclay’s Premier League. The next season was horrible for them as they survived relegation dramatically. Claudio Ranieri came in as the new manager of the underdog club. He built a strong squad who was motivated and determined to win. And in the end, the foxes won the Premier League title.


1. Chapecoense’s plane crash incident

A tragic incident took place in 2016. The Brazilian club Chapecoense won the semi-final of the Copa Sudamericana and were on their way back home. Everyone, on the board, was happy for their progress. But sometimes life is cruel. The plane crashed and everyone on the plane died except for 2 survivors who are in critical condition. The players died happily celebrating their win.
